How to do Low Maintenance Gardening

Maintaining a garden can be a lot of hard work. With pruning, weeding and watering, it can quickly take up most of your free time, especially if you have lots of plants to look after. A low maintenance garden doesn’t have to be a concrete jungle however. With a few clever tips and tricks, you can create a beautiful space to enjoy in the sunshine, without any back breaking effort.

Choose Key Elements of Your Garden

Decide what elements of a garden are important to you. Do you need a large lawn area for the kids to play on? Do you have a vegetable patch or a much loved Guide to Growing Roses? Perhaps you need a good sized patio area for entertaining. Whatever your needs, it’s important to set these out first. That way, you have a good starting point to remove any unnecessary elements of your garden.

To Mow or Not to Mow?

It’s a common misconception that lawns are high maintenance. It can take a lot more time and effort to de-weed and clean a patio than it does to mow a lawn. Reduce the size of your lawn if this makes it more manageable, and convert any unused areas to gravel for a low maintenance surface. If you want the grass look but with zero effort, astro turf is becoming an increasingly popular option, as it looks like lush, green, healthy grass year long, without any mowing whatsoever.

Flowers and Borders

The main upkeep in any garden will be flowers and borders. They’ll need deadheading, weeding and watering, and that’s at a minimum. Ornamental grasses and rock gardens make lovely alternatives that require little maintenance, with some varieties withstanding the wet and cold winters. If you do want a flower bed, cover the borders with mulch or bark. This helps suppress weed growth - a helping hand that even the keenest gardener appreciates!

All Hands on Deck

Decking is much less maintenance than a patio or lawn, but will need treating and painting every year to keep it in good condition. If you want to decorate your decking with container pots and hanging baskets, be aware that these can take a lot of upkeep. As they can’t collect water from the soil, they’ll need watering regularly. During the hot summer months, this will be everyday.

We hope these tips give you a few ideas for your own home. Although a low maintenance garden doesn’t mean no maintenance, it will allow you to spend more time enjoying your garden and less time tending to it!
