Creating a moodboard isn’t just for the design professionals, and can be one of the most fun and creative parts about redecorating a room in your home. A moodboard helps refine your ideas, allowing you to gather them in one place without getting overwhelmed or confused by the whole process. Online boards are free and easy, but when it comes to decorating your home, we think physical samples of fabrics, paint swatches and wallpaper samples can’t be beaten. Try multiple moodboards for different ideas you have, and let your imagination run wild.
If you don’t have an idea already of where you’d like to take your design, brainstorming is a great way to get inspiration and gather ideas. Pinterest, magazines, and online forums are great resources for exploring what other people have created.
A piece of white card is the first step in creating your moodboard. You’ll want to use masking tape and adhesive dots, as this allows you to easily move elements of your moodboard around. Craft pens and chalk are great for annotating your board with your ideas, and you’ll want a pair of scissors to cut out different components for the board.
Whether cut out from magazines or printed off the internet, the backbone of your moodboard will probably be similar rooms that have the look and feel you’re going for. We think one of the most fun parts of creating a moodboard is finding paint palettes, wallpaper samples and fabric swatches. The different textures add interest to your moodboard and can really give you a feel for how your room will look once it’s decorated. Fat quarter sets and tester paint pots are a great way to liven up your project.
There are no rules when it comes to assembling your moodboard, it really is a chance for you to get as creative as you can. Some of you may want to keep it structured and neat, while others may want to layer as many elements as you can, there really is no right way.
