How To Properly Store Your Christmas Decorations

Our homes are transformed in December with festive decorations, twinkling lights, and beautiful ornaments. But once the celebrations are over, there comes a moment in January when everything needs to come down and be stored away safely. It might not be the most joyful part of the season, especially when you're still basking in the holiday spirit, but thinking ahead can save a lot of hassle later on.

If you've ever opened a box of tangled lights or found broken baubles from poor storage, you’ll know how frustrating it can be. That’s why we’ve put together some of the best Christmas decoration storage ideas, so you’ll feel organised, confident, and ready to enjoy next year’s decorating without stress.

    Choosing the Right Storage Containers

Before anything else, think about what you’ll use to store your decorations. Everything needs to be protected from dust, moisture, and even pests. Avoid flimsy cardboard boxes or plastic bin bags. Not only are they unreliable, but they also offer little protection for delicate items.

    Artificial Christmas Trees
After the festivities, an artificial Christmas tree should be carefully packed to maintain its shape and condition. Compress the branches and place the tree in a durable bag or container to prevent dust buildup and make it easier to store in compact spaces.

    Real Christmas Trees
If you’ve chosen a real tree with roots, why not plant it in your garden? While it might not be suitable to bring indoors next year, it's a sustainable choice that adds beauty to your outdoor space and reduces waste.

    Baubles and Hanging Decorations
Baubles, especially those made from glass or with intricate designs, need extra care. Use a storage box with individual compartments to keep each decoration separate and secure. This prevents damage and keeps your collection organised and ready for next year.

    Statues and Festive Ornaments
Larger decorations like statues or plaques won’t fit into standard ornament boxes. Wrap each item in bubble wrap or newspaper and place it in strong, well-fitting boxes. Choose boxes that stack well and label them clearly to make things easier next season.

    Leftover Wrapping Paper
After all the gifts are opened, there’s usually a selection of leftover wrapping paper. To prevent it from getting crumpled or faded, roll it up and store it in a long tube or container. This protects the paper and could save you money next year when you find you don’t need to buy new rolls.

Where to Store Your Christmas Decorations

Once everything is packed away, the next decision is where to put it all. The right storage location depends on the space in your home and how easy you want it to be to access your decorations next year.

    Loft or Basement
The loft and basement are traditional storage areas for a reason. They’re spacious, out of the way, and ideal for stacking boxes. However, they can involve tricky stairs or tight spaces, so they may not be the most practical option for everyone.

    Spare Room
If you have a spare bedroom that doubles as a storage space, it’s a great alternative. It avoids the need to carry heavy boxes up or down ladders and keeps everything easily accessible when December comes around again.

    Under-Bed Storage
Flat storage boxes can slide neatly under the bed, keeping decorations out of sight but within easy reach. This is ideal for storing smaller items like baubles, wrapping paper, or even fairy lights.

    Cupboard Under the Stairs
Another convenient option is the space under the stairs. It’s often underused, and with the right storage solutions, you can keep everything tidy and organised without needing to venture too far into the house.

Putting away your Christmas decorations might not be the highlight of the season, but with a little planning, it doesn’t have to be a chore. Use sturdy storage containers, keep things organised, and choose a sensible place to store everything. When next Christmas comes around, you’ll be glad you took the time to pack things away properly.
