Caring for your Fabric Sofa

Fabric sofas can easily collect dust, debris, and odours, but keeping them clean and cared for doesn’t take much. Discover our great tips and ideas to ensure your sofa cushions and upholstery looks good as new for years to come.

Regular Vacuuming

One of the quickest and easiest ways to ensure that your sofa remains clean and crumb-free is to vacuum it once a week. Remove the cushions from the couch, and using the vacuum hose and a soft brush attachment, clean all cushions and the sofa frames – especially those areas between the arms and the seat! By keeping the brush soft and the vacuum on a low setting, you can prevent damage to the fabric.

Stain Removal

Fabric sofas can absorb stains quickly, so removing them as soon as possible is best. Mop up any excess liquid or food with a cloth, then spot-clean the stain with fabric cleaner per the bottle instructions.

Keeping Cushions Plump

You can prevent your cushions from becoming flat and lifeless by plumping them up once a day. This helps to keep the filling evenly distributed and can help prevent premature sagging. Whilst you might have a favourite seat on your sofa, try and sit on all of them evenly so one seat cushion doesn’t wear out faster than the others.

Keeping the Colour Vibrant

Direct sunlight can fade the colour of your fabric sofa, making it look older than it is. Ensure your sofa is placed away from the window to keep direct sun from it, or cover it with a throw or cover during the brightest parts of the day.

If you have a light-coloured sofa, ensure your cushions and throws have a colourfast fabric or have been sufficiently washed enough to remove excess dye to prevent colour transfer, as it’s extremely difficult to get out of the upholstery. We also recommend removing dark-coloured clothing before settling on the sofa for the evening.
