Wooden fencing is a terrific way to add privacy and structure to your garden, allowing you to enjoy some peace and quiet. If not maintained, fencing can become battered by the weather, making it look run down over time. Keeping your fences in tip-top condition will help extend their lifespan and keep your garden looking its best all year round. With just a little care and maintenance, our handy guide will help them look as good as new in no time.
Before delving into any painting or restoration, the first step you need to take is to make sure that the fence is clean. We also recommend covering any plants, borders and flower beds to prevent them from becoming exposed to any harmful chemicals or debris. If your fence is structurally sturdy, a pressure washer can blast away dirt in no time. If you notice any mould, a chemical formula can quickly work on stubborn stains and help remove the mould to prep the fence before treatment. Once cleaned, ensure the fencing is completely dry before proceeding to the next steps.
Fencing can become weathered over time, particularly in winter when the conditions are harsher. Wooden fences can become discoloured, and the timber can begin to split or rot. Once rot sets in, there is very little salvaging it. The only resolution is replacing or reinforcing the impacted panel or post. Take the time to pinpoint areas needing fixing, sanding or replacing to make your fencing looks as good as new and structurally sound.
Once your fencing is clean and repairs completed, the final step is to treat and protect, but what are your choices?
Fence stains are great for enhancing the natural look of the wood. They have a much thinner consistency and penetrate the timber to protect the wood from within. The stain will slowly fade over time and can be re-treated without removal, so less maintenance is required to upkeep the appearance of your fence.
Fence paints are available in natural and bold colours, perfect for changing the shade or adding a splash of vibrancy to your garden. Unlike stains, paints protect the timber from the outside rather than penetrating the wood. They have a much thicker consistency and still provide the same protection against weathering. Over time, fence paint will peel and flake, so before repainting will need to be sanded down or removed.
Paints and stains are incredibly simple to apply with a paintbrush or sprayer. Thoroughly mixing your paint or stain will help prevent any patchiness and uneven application. Load a paintbrush, roller or sprayer with plenty of paint or stain. Starting at the top and working your way down, apply the mixture along the grain until your fences are covered. Wait for the instructed time for them to dry before repeating the process and adding a second coat.
Once you've applied a couple of coats and the fence paint or stain has dried, it's time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour. Your Fences will look as good as new and bring new life to your garden. To help maintain fences and keep them looking their best, clear dirt regularly and re-treat them every 2 to 3 years.
