The days are getting warmer, and the evenings are drawing out - summer is definitely on its way. The birds are now settling into their nests, the raucous mating displays drawing to a close, and the last migrants finally arriving on our shores. Here’s a list of a few birds to keep your eye out for this season.
You’ll see swifts as they start to dart through our skies when they make their way over from Africa. They are only here until July, so there isn’t long to appreciate this visitor. They love to nest in the eaves of buildings, so look out for them during the evening when they swoop and dive for insects. Swifts are the fastest flying birds and spend most of their time in the air, even when sleeping!
Another late arrival to our shores, flycatchers are beautiful, unassuming little birds that can be seen hopping around the garden catching insects. They are specially adapted to catching stinging insects and removing the sting on their perch before eating them. You are much more likely to see flycatchers if you live near woodland; unfortunately, their numbers have significantly decreased in recent years.
Bullfinches are unmistakable birds, with vibrant red breasts and a striking black head and wings. A native to the UK, they are shy birds that aren’t easy to spot. However, you’re more likely to see them during the breeding season as they venture further afield to get food for their young. If you catch one, listen carefully for their very soft, quiet and gentle call.
Loving to nest in hedgerows and trees, blackbirds are one of the most commonly seen birds in UK gardens, and they love to dig in the soft lawn for worms and grubs. The month of May is right in the middle of their breeding season, meaning they’ll be particularly active as they gather plenty of food for their brood. The female blackbird is brown and often mistaken for a thrush.
