If you're looking to spend time with the family this Halloween instead of rushing around organising a party or heading out trick or treating, we've got a few family-friendly ideas for a cosy night in instead!
Whilst the TV channels might be littered with scary movies on Halloween night, they're not particularly appropriate for kids. Thankfully, many other Halloween movies can be enjoyed by kids and adults. Grab some throws, hot chocolate, some leftover trick or treat candy, and snuggle up on the sofa as a family to watch a film. Some of our family-friendly Halloween flicks include Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, Hocus Pocus, Monster House, Scooby-Doo, The Addams Family, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Games aren't just for big Halloween parties! If you're planning a quiet one this year, you can scale down many traditional Halloween party games. Why not grab a large bowl filled with water and a few apples for a game of apple bobbing? You can have a spider race if you want something less messy. Simply get some plastic spiders and a straw each and blow your spider across a table and see who can get theirs over first.
If you've got some toilet paper to spare, you can race to see who can make a mummy the fastest. Split into two teams and nominate one person to be the mummy. Then, wrap the toilet paper around your volunteer until you've made a mummy!
You might even like to try telling ghost stories and see who can come up with the scariest!
If you want to make something special for Halloween night, you can browse our article on Gory Halloween Recipes. If those recipes don't tickle your fancy, you and the kids can decorate some cupcakes with an icing pen to create cobwebs, ghosts, and more (fun, and you get a tasty snack at the end of it. It's a win-win!) You might even like to try making some meringues and piping them into ghost shapes before baking and adding some edible eyes.
There are a lot of Halloween decorations you can use to decorate your home this autumn, from animated characters to window and door decorations and more. You can get the kids to help you put up your pre-bought decorations, or you can get arty by making your decorations. Make spiders out of pom-poms and pipe cleaners for your mantelpiece, or make bats for your walls by cutting out shapes from paper plates, painting them black, adding a cute (or terrifying!) face, and sticking the pieces together!
And of course, what Halloween night is complete without a little pumpkin carving?
