Halloween is on the way, which means it’s time to dust off your best fancy dress costume and get your home ready for the party celebrations. It’s not very often we get to fully embrace goblins, flying witches, dancing skeletons and other spooky creatures, so make the most of this time of the year with some eye-catching decorations. It doesn’t have to cost the earth or take a long time, and just a few small touches will soon get your home into the Halloween spirit.
It wouldn’t be Halloween without some pumpkins, and putting them in your windowsill or doorway is a great way to let trick or treaters know they are welcome. Carve them into your best ghoulish face, and add tea lights for an ambient glow. You could also fill them with battery operated fairy lights if you don’t want to leave candles burning on their own. Pumpkins also work really well as a statement feature on your mantelpiece or fireplace, especially when you have a few of them that you can group together. Get crafty and paint them with bright colours, or cover in glitter and other decorations for a fun alternative.
Cobwebs draped across the ceiling, light fittings and windows are an easy way to add drama to any room, and almost instantly give it a creepy atmosphere. You can purchase large spider webs or even make your own out of black bin liners, even adding plastic spiders and hanging bats as an extra touch. They can also be used outside to decorate driveways and pathways, perfect for leading guests to where the party’s at!
For a more subtle approach, try cutting out shapes of ghosts or eerie faces to stick to windows and mirrors. They’ll surprise guests throughout the house, and can be as humorous or as scary as you can handle! We also like the idea of covering your windows with black cardboard, cutting out eye holes and backing with yellow or orange paper. From the outside, it will look as though your house is a creepy monster, perfect for kids parties.
A final touch that adds a magical and otherworldly feel to your decorations is hanging ceiling decorations, whether this is candles, bats or even small witches hats! String them up from light fittings or in your porch to add real atmosphere.
