How to Soothe Your Sensitive Skin

There is no better feeling than loving the skin that you are in, but sometimes our skin doesn't always love us back. Unfortunately, day-to-day life can be very harsh on your skin, especially when feeling a bit sensitive. Our top tips to soothe sensitive skin will have you feeling refreshed and glowing in no time.

What is sensitive skin?

The term sensitive skin refers to skin prone to inflammation and irritation. Chemicals, dyes, fragrances and environmental factors can cause aggravation. We can address sensitive skin by identifying and eliminating triggers and using specially formulated products. Always consult your doctor if uncertain, as skin troubles may indicate underlying health concerns or allergies.

Cleansing is key

One of the best ways to soothe delicate skin is to build a daily skincare routine with products that leave you glowing without inflammation. Less is more when dealing with skin prone to irritation, so it's best to keep things simple. The first step in any skincare routine is to ensure your face is clean and makeup free. Gentle cleansing water is perfect for removing stubborn dirt and makeup without being too harsh on the skin. Reusable makeup pads are the ideal alternative to disposable wipes or pads. However, ensure you wash pads frequently to avoid the build-up of bacteria.

Keep skin moisturised

Moisturising daily has many benefits, particularly during colder weather. When the skin becomes dehydrated, it's more susceptible to damage and infection due to cracks in the surface which can allow bacteria and dirt to enter. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser twice daily to tackle dry skin and help stimulate blood circulation to keep the skin healthy and glowing. When applying moisturiser to the face, massage the formula gently into your skin with upward movements, as rubbing may cause aggravation. Body moisturiser or butter is also a must-have for restoring moisture and natural defences, particularly after shaving or cleansing, as this strips the skin of essential moisture.

Laundry and cleaning

Switching to specially formulated soaps and laundry detergent can help minimise acne, itchiness and redness. For sensitivity, use mild washing powder designed for sensitive skin and people who suffer from allergic reactions. Ensure that bedding, towels, and makeup brushes are clean to minimise bacteria and dirt.

Sun protection

Sunscreen is a must to protect your skin from harmful sun rays. Prolonged sun exposure can have long-lasting and detrimental effects no matter your skin type. Wearing SPF protects essential proteins in the skin, such as keratin, which maintains smooth skin and keeps it healthy in appearance and function. Even on overcast days, wear sun protection to minimise premature wrinkles, sun spots, and skin cancer.

Diet and hydration

Lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep quality and hydration can enormously impact your skin. Switching to a diet rich in antioxidants can help protect against environmental factors such as pollution and colder weather. Eating nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables helps improve skin elasticity, hydration and oil control. Staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water helps flush toxins from the body and minimise pores. Eating healthier and drinking water will make you feel better and leave your skin feeling radiant and less delicate.
