How to Keep your Bin Fresh

We all know cleaning the bin is probably the least favourite chore for most of us; it’s smelly, messy and generally rather unpleasant. But by keeping on top of it, it’s not such a miserable task. We’ve assembled our top tips for keeping your bin fresh.

If you haven’t cleaned your bin in a while, it might require a deeper clean to start off with. We suggest taking it out to the garden and hosing it down inside and out. Use a disinfectant and a brush to scrub away any stubborn dirt and grime, and leave it to dry completely.

For a regular, smaller clean, remove the bin bag and wipe down any moisture inside. Wipe the bin inside and out with disinfectant. Importantly, don’t forget to clean the lid on both sides!

When your bin is completely dry, sprinkle some bin freshening powder at the bottom of it. This will help absorb excess liquid and produce a fresh scent to keep your bin smelling great. For a fresh citrus scent, this bin freshener is a fantastic choice. If you just want to do a routine spritz to banish bad odours, opt for this Bin Brite Odour Spray.

Alternatively, put a few drops of essential oils on a couple of cotton rounds and place them in the bottom of the bin – this is especially ideal for bathroom bins. It will mask unpleasant odours and make your home feel more lavish. For an ultra-hygienic spin on this hack, use a concentrated disinfectant

Top Tips

  • Wipe your bin with disinfectant every time you change the bin bag. Cleaning as you go means less work later on!

  • Do a deep clean once a month.

  • Don’t skip on cleaning the lid.

  • If your bin has a stainless-steel finish, use glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth for a streak-free shine.

  • Make sure your bin is fully dry before replacing the bag.

  • Don’t over-fill the bin. This can lead to tears in bin bags and consequently, more mess.

Keeping your home feeling hygeinic and clean really is all in the details, so why not pick yourself up a brand new waste bin, now you've got all the essentials to keep it fresh.
