Planning a family camping trip is super exciting, full of adventure and nights around the campfire, but a little planning goes a long way to help avoid sleepless nights and soggy socks! From packing smart to cooking in the great outdoors, these useful camping tips will help make your trip all about the fun while being functional.
Packing appropriately can make a HUGE difference to your camping trip. One of the best packing tips is to pack light and choose multipurpose gear. A simple capsule wardrobe helps stop overpacking while providing everything you need to stay warm (or cool) and comfy.
Warm layers and waterproof clothing are a must for living your best life outdoors, especially as the weather can change at the drop of a hat. Packing cubes are a fab way to organise your gear and keep smaller items from getting lost.
For better visibility at night, add reflective tape to belongings such as bags, torches, or tent zips. If you’re unsure what to bring, take a peek at our top camping essentials checklist for more of the ultimate must-haves.
Picking the right tent is the MOST important part of planning the ultimate triumphant camping trip. The size, weather protection, and ease of setup can all make or break your voyage. Not sure where to start? Our guide to buying a tent can help you find the perfect pick!
Good campsite organisation makes camping a breeze. Separating areas for sleeping, cooking, and washing helps keep your campsite tidy and prevents unnecessary mess.
It’s also a smart idea to place a small flashlight or headlamp at the doorway of each area - this simple trick makes it much easier to find your way around your campsite in the dark.
Cooking while camping can seem daunting without your home comforts, with a pinch of preparation, you can still enjoy simple and scrumptious meals that are perfect for refuelling after a long day of adventuring (all without packing the kitchen sink!)
A kettle is a great addition to your camping cooking gear. It’s awesome for tea, coffee, instant noodles, or quick meals after exploring. Try pre-measuring ingredients like coffee, hot chocolate, or soup mixes into small zip-lock bags. Small containers or travel tins work super well for storing spices and seasonings to give your meals that extra kick of flavour (yum!)
Another useful tip is to pre-cook and freeze meals before you leave. These will slowly defrost during the day and can be quickly reheated, making dinner straightforward and stress-free after a long day of hiking or exploring.
Staying hydrated while camping is suuuuuper important! Collapsible water jugs are a practical option, they’re lightweight and effortless to pack. You can mark water levels for drinking, cooking or cleaning to keep things managed. Packing pro tip: Water jugs can also double as lanterns by placing a head torch behind them to create a soft glow around your tent - let the shadow puppet fun begin!
Freezing bottles of water rather than using ice packs is a clever hack to minimise packing. They’ll keep your food cool for longer, and once thawed, you’ll have fresh water ready to go!
A great night’s sleep can make all the difference. And with the right gear and a few easy hacks, you can stay warm, comfortable, and well-rested in the great outdoors - no counting sheep necessary!
Choosing the proper sleeping bag for camping is crucial to staying warm overnight. For extra comfort and easier cleaning, layer your sleeping bag with blankets or liners. It’s also a good idea to keep bedding in large waterproof bags, so it stays dry during transport or during any unexpected downpours.
Before bedtime, you can pre-warm your sleeping bag by leaving it in the sun during the day or placing a hot water bottle inside before turning in for the night. Double sleeping bags are terrific for couples or kids sharing a tent, offering extra warmth and comfort. A super simple (but mega smart) trick is to keep the clothes you plan to wear the next day inside your sleeping bag so they stay toasty and ready to put on in the morning.
A comfortable camping air mattress or blow-up bed can make sleeping in a tent feel like snoozing in the comfort of your own bed. Before your trip, partially inflate your mattress to check for leaks. And be sure to bring a small repair kit, patch kit, or even some duct tape - they are a real lifesaver if a quick fix is needed! Placing a foam pad or ground mat underneath your mattress can also help prevent punctures and add extra insulation.
Consider using a battery-powered or hand pump to inflate your mattress quickly, plus it takes way less effort. Check out our guide to getting a great night’s sleep while camping for even more sleep-inspo.
Whilst not the most glamorous topic… a portable camping toilet can make a BIG difference, especially when camping with family or at sites without facilities. For extra comfort and privacy, setting up a small pop-up privacy tent around the toilet is a superb solution. Lining the toilet with biodegradable bags makes cleanup easy peasy and less… yucky. After each use, sprinkling a little baking soda inside the bag can help contain odours and leave things smelling like roses.
A doormat outside your tent can help stop mud and dirt from being tracked inside, and having a pair of campsite slippers or easy slip-on shoes is also helpful for quick trips in and out of the tent, whilst looking oh so stylish!
Portable fans can improve airflow inside during warmer weather, while rain tarps provide added defence against the ever-changing weather. Keep electronics such as phones, torches, and battery packs in waterproof bags to shield them from rain, condensation, or accidental spills - no whoops moments here!
Citronella candles can help decrease pesky insects around your tent in the evenings (plus they smell really great), and burning sage is another natural way some campers help deter unwanted guests.
