Guide to Buying Children's Beds

When your little one moves from their cot into a real bed, it can be tricky to decide what bed will be best for them. Safety and practicality are the primary considerations, but you must also consider the space available and if they’ll be sharing with other siblings. There are many creative options for kids beds, from bright and colourful designs to beds with slides and play areas. Here’s our quick guide to help you choose the right bed for your child.

Bunk Beds

A classic of many childhoods, bunk beds are a great way to save space in the home. Traditionally, this option is used when two children share a room, with many beds dismantling into two single beds if needed. This versatility is great as the children age and saves you from repurchasing beds after a short time. If you need more space, you might want to look at triple bunk beds, which include a double bed at the bottom.

Bunk beds can generally be found in wooden and metal options. Metal beds are lighter and may be easier to put together, but this lightness can make them less sturdy than wooden alternatives, which is something to consider if your kids use the bed as a climbing frame! Wooden beds are more expensive but often found in various bright colours and can last years of wear and tear. Please also note that bunk beds are advised for children older than 6, as they can be a climbing hazard to younger children.

Toddler Beds

Usually smaller than a single bed, these often come in novelty designs, including cars, boats and magical carriages. They are a great option for younger children, making bedtime fun, exciting, and safe because they include side rails to prevent your child from rolling out of bed. These are a natural step from a cot to a full-size bed and help make the transition easy and stress-free for your child. Most toddler beds will fit a cot mattress, too, making them a great value, practical choice.

High Rise Beds

Ideal for older children, these feature a work or play area underneath a raised-up bed. Great for smaller rooms, they can see the child right through until their teenage years, with the play area gradually changing into a designated homework area. There is so much choice regarding the design of these beds, with many including a fun slide and even side sheets to transform the underneath into a den.
