Choose the right bird food for your garden

A mixed bird seed blend is a fantastic place to start if you want to attract a variety of garden birds - including finches, siskins, and robins. Sunflower hearts are another popular option, while peanuts, suet pellets, and fat balls are available to suit different feeders and feeding habits. Mealworms are also available for birds that enjoy insect-based food.

Not sure where to start? Think about the birds visiting your garden, the feeder you have, and how much food you get through.

Stock up on bird seed and suet treats from The Range

Keep your feeders topped up with bird seed, or try suet blocks, pellets and logs when you want to offer something different. Larger packs can be handy if you feed birds regularly, while smaller bags let you try different varieties without buying too much at once.

Store bird food in a cool, dry place and clean feeders regularly. Remove old or damp food to help keep feeding areas hygienic.

    Wild Bird Food FAQs

What is the best food for wild birds?

Different birds prefer different foods, so seed mixes, sunflower hearts, mealworms and suet products can all attract garden visitors. Check the product instructions to see how each food should be offered, and follow current seasonal feeding advice.

When should you put out wild bird food?

The type of food matters as much as the time of year. The RSPB currently advises pausing seeds and peanuts between 1 May and 31 October, while small amounts of mealworms, fat balls and suet can be offered year-round. Keep feeders clean and avoid leaving uneaten food to build up.

What is the difference between bird seed mix and sunflower hearts?

Bird seed mixes contain a blend of ingredients, while sunflower hearts are the kernels without their outer husks. The right option depends on the birds you hope to attract and the type of feeder you use.
