With the dark and cold weather, January isn’t often a time you think about you garden but it’s never too soon to prepare for the perfect summer garden. January is a great time to organise, prep and plan so you’re ready and raring to go when spring comes around the corner. We’ve compiled a few ideas to get you out in the garden below.
Planning: Take the time to plan out what you want your garden to look like for the year. Once planned, you can buy the correct seeds, pots, containers, decorative items. If you’re planning on adding a pond or water features then this is a great time to shop around and even install them if you’re dying to get out in your garden.
Last minute bulbs: Whilst it’s better to plant the majority of your bulbs in November, some flowers such as tulips and daffodils are fine for January planting. They may have a smaller blooms but it’s better late than never!
Cutting back and pruning trees and bushes: Whether you’ve planned a large scale-back or just want to tidy a few dead branches, January is a great time to be cutting back your trees and bushes as the plants remain dormant. It’s important to do this before March when birds start nesting. Pruning your garden will prevent any plants outgrowing their space and make sure they flower beautifully.
Cleaning: You can use this quiet period to make sure your pots, glasshouses or greenhouses are clean, tidy and ready for the warmer weather. Rakes, Hoes & Cultivators leaves and make leaf mould, which can then be covered or put in wire basket to use as compost.
Planting: If you have a greenhouse, you can sew sweet pea seeds and start propagating. Inside your home you can sew tomato seeds ready to be planted later in the year. As long as the soil outdoors is workable, you can plant roses, shrubs and some trees.
Wildlife: Ensure you keep putting out food and water for birds to keep them happy and healthy throughout the water and encourage wildlife to come into your garden.
